Speaking before the duet, Sam said: “I can’t believe that I am duetting with The Nicole Scherzinger. I can’t wait to sing alongside her on that stage, I can’t wait!”
The paired performed Jennifer Hudson’s And I’m Telling You from musical Dreamgirls together, but it was a performance that was plagued by technical difficulties.
Even putting aside the random voices heard over the top of the two singers, Nicole’s been accused of trying to make the song all about her.
Fans have claimed that the Pussycat Doll singer had all the “best” lines of the track and took on the big notes of the famous tune.
One viewer complained: “They gave her all the best parts of the song. How ridiculous.”
Another added: “It was like they were trying to out sing each other, instead of singing with each other.”
After the performance – which Gary Barlow described as the best of the night – Nicole said: “I just want to thank Mrs O for putting us together, thank you so much Mrs O. We love you and this series wouldn’t be the same without you.”
She added of Sam: “This one is right in the middle of glory and it was an honour to share the stage with her.”
However despite singing with Sam, Nicole insisted she was still an impartial judge.
“Last year I had two acts in the final, now Louis knows what that feels like. He is a little tired right now. I can relax and just support all three of the contestants,” she explained. “[But] I think that Sam Bailey is the favourite.”
