In a new interview, Matt insisted they were still best mates despite Freddy moving out of the flat they shared together just weeks after moving in.
Matt explained: “He’s my best mate. I understood why he had to go, though; he wants to save money, he wants to go home with his family, so I totally respect that. But I’m sure I’ll see him soon, He’s writing his music and I’m writing mine, so as soon as he’s free we’ll definitely catch up."
Chatting to Reveal magazine, Matt said of their time living together: “We were both clean! We got on really well, which was good.”
Now Matt is living alone while he records his debut album in London and is loving having a place to call his own.
“It’s more of a little safety zone,” Matt said. “It’s where I go back to chill out, but I do have friends over.”
Following his victory on The X Factor last year, Matt had to deny he and Freddy were involved in a secret relationship after the final live show.
Some viewers were sure they saw Matt and Freddy "having a cheeky wee snog", to quote one user on Twitter, after he performed his winner's song for the first time and was joined on stage by the finalists.
Matt spoke out after the final to say the pair were just friends despite fans willing them together.
"I don’t know what this is about," Matt told The Sun newspaper. “Freddy is my little brother, we hit it off straight away.
“Since day one, we are just bros man. We have such a bromance going – no relationship I’m afraid guys, I’m sorry to say. Sorry man.”
And Matt cheekily quipped: "I don’t think we kissed but he would have been lucky if I did.”
